Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 pound large shrimp, peeled and deveined (cooked or raw)
  • 1 cup ketchup
  • 1/4 cup prepared horseradish (adjust to taste for heat)
  • 2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon hot sauce (like Tabasco)
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • For Mexican Style (Optional Addition): 1 (15 ounce) can Clamato juice
  • For Mexican Style (Optional Addition): 1/2 cup finely diced tomato
  • For Mexican Style (Optional Addition): 1/4 cup finely diced white onion
  • For Mexican Style (Optional Addition): 1/4 cup finely diced cucumber
  • For Mexican Style (Optional Addition): 1/4 cup chopped cilantro
  • For Mexican Style (Optional Addition): 1 lime, juiced

Instructions

  1. If starting with raw shrimp, cook them until pink and opaque, about 2-3 minutes. Immediately transfer the cooked shrimp to an ice bath to stop cooking and chill them quickly. Drain well.
  2. To make the Classic Cocktail Sauce: In a medium bowl, combine the ketchup, prepared horseradish, lemon juice, Worcestershire sauce, hot sauce, salt, and pepper. Stir until completely mixed. Taste and adjust horseradish or lemon juice for your preferred zest level.
  3. For Classic Presentation: Arrange the chilled shrimp around the rim of a glass bowl or individual serving glasses. Place a small cup of the homemade cocktail sauce in the center for dipping.
  4. For Mexican Shrimp Cocktail (Coctel de Camarones): If using, combine the chilled, cooked shrimp with the Clamato juice, diced tomato, onion, cucumber, and cilantro in a large bowl. Add the extra lime juice. Gently stir to combine.
  5. Chill the Mexican shrimp mixture for at least 30 minutes to allow the flavors to meld.
  6. Serve the Mexican shrimp cocktail chilled in tall glasses, perhaps garnished with avocado slices or salt and chili powder on the rim.
  7. Prepare your presentation ahead of time; both versions are best served very cold.

Notes

  • For the best flavor, make the classic cocktail sauce at least one hour ahead of time so the flavors can fully develop.
  • If you are serving the Mexican style, you can use pre-cooked, chilled shrimp to make this a truly no-cook shrimp appetizer.
  • Presenting your shrimp cocktail as a wreath centerpiece is a fantastic way to create an elegant appetizer for entertaining.
