Announcing the good news: you can make a rich, layered Mississippi Mud Pie that tastes incredible without complicated steps. This recipe delivers that classic Southern chocolate indulgence.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 1/2 cups chocolate wafer crumbs (or Oreo crumbs for a richer crust)
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 (8 ounce) package cream cheese, softened
  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 1 (12 ounce) container frozen whipped topping, thawed, divided
  • 1 (3.9 ounce) package instant chocolate pudding mix
  • 2 cups cold milk
  • 1 (12 ounce) container frozen whipped topping, thawed (for topping)
  • 1/2 cup chocolate chips or shaved chocolate for garnish

Instructions

  1. Prepare the crust: Mix the chocolate wafer crumbs and melted butter until combined. Press the mixture firmly into the bottom and up the sides of a 9-inch pie plate. Place the crust in the freezer while you prepare the filling.
  2. Make the cream cheese layer: In a medium bowl, beat the softened cream cheese until smooth. Gradually beat in the powdered sugar until fully incorporated. Gently fold in half of the thawed whipped topping until just combined. Spread this mixture evenly over the chilled crust.
  3. Make the pudding layer: In a separate bowl, whisk together the instant chocolate pudding mix and cold milk for 2 minutes, or until the mixture begins to thicken. Let it stand for 5 minutes.
  4. Assemble the layers: Spread the thickened chocolate pudding mixture over the cream cheese layer. Top the pudding layer with the remaining half of the first container of whipped topping.
  5. Chill: Cover the pie loosely and refrigerate for at least 4 hours, or until firm. This chilling time is important for setting the layers.
  6. Serve: Before serving, top the pie with the remaining container of thawed whipped topping. Sprinkle the top with chocolate chips or shaved chocolate. Slice and serve this incredible dessert immediately.

Notes

  • For an even richer, fudgier base, use crushed Oreo cookies instead of chocolate wafers in the crust.
  • If you want a truly showstopper dessert, use homemade whipped cream instead of the frozen topping.
  • This pie is best served cold directly from the refrigerator.
