This recipe delivers a wonderfully soft, fluffy inside bread with a perfectly crisp, buttery crust. It is the ultimate weeknight dinner side that comes together fast with simple ingredients and no kneading required.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 tablespoon white sugar
  • 1 cup sharp cheddar cheese, shredded
  • 2 teaspoons garlic powder
  • 1 (12 ounce) bottle of room temperature beer (lager or pale ale works well)
  • 4 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C). Grease and flour a standard 9×5 inch loaf pan.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, salt, and sugar. This is your dry mix.
  3. Stir in the shredded cheddar cheese and garlic powder until they distribute evenly through the dry ingredients.
  4. Pour the room temperature beer into the dry mixture. Mix gently with a spoon until just combined. Do not overmix; a few lumps are fine. Overmixing develops gluten and results in a tough loaf.
  5. Pour the batter into your prepared loaf pan.
  6. Drizzle the 4 tablespoons of melted butter evenly over the top of the batter.
  7. Bake for 45 to 55 minutes, or until a wooden skewer inserted into the center comes out clean. The crust should be golden brown.
  8. Let the bread cool in the pan for 10 minutes before turning it out onto a wire rack to cool completely. Slice and serve warm for the best flavor.

Notes

  • Using room temperature beer helps the baking powder create a better rise since there is no yeast activation time.
  • For a chewier, more savory loaf, use a darker beer like a stout or brown ale.
  • This easy bread recipe is fantastic served warm with chili or soup.
  • If you want a simpler version, omit the cheese and garlic powder for a classic 3 ingredient recipe base.
