Make irresistible, savory-sweet green beans coated in a sticky glaze with crispy bacon pieces. This recipe is simple enough for a weeknight but flavorful enough for a holiday meal.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 lb fresh green beans, trimmed
  • 4 slices bacon, chopped
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar, packed
  • 1/4 cup soy sauce
  • 1/4 cup water
  • 1 teaspoon minced garlic

Instructions

  1. Cook the chopped bacon in a large skillet over medium heat until crisp. Remove the bacon with a slotted spoon and set aside, leaving about 1 tablespoon of bacon grease in the skillet.
  2. Add the trimmed green beans to the skillet with the bacon grease. Sauté for 5 to 7 minutes until the beans are tender-crisp.
  3. In a small bowl, whisk together the brown sugar, soy sauce, water, and minced garlic until the sugar dissolves.
  4. Pour the sauce mixture over the green beans in the skillet. Bring the mixture to a simmer.
  5. Cook, stirring occasionally, for 5 to 8 minutes, or until the sauce thickens and coats the beans evenly.
  6. Remove from heat. Stir in the reserved cooked bacon pieces. Serve immediately.

Notes

  • For a less sweet version, reduce the brown sugar to 1/3 cup.
  • If you prefer a crispier texture, roast the beans at 400F for 15 minutes before tossing them with the reduced sauce.
  • You can substitute liquid smoke for a small amount of the water if you want a deeper smoky flavor.
