Create a delightful sweet focaccia bread with a warm cinnamon sugar topping. This recipe from Hungry Herald is perfect for bakers looking for a dessert-style treat.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 packet active dry yeast (2 1/4 teaspoons)
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 1 cup warm water (105-115°F)
  • 3 cups all-purpose flour, plus more for dusting
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 cup olive oil, plus more for greasing
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 tablespoons ground cinnamon
  • 2 tablespoons melted butter

Instructions

  1. In a small bowl, combine the yeast, 1 teaspoon sugar, and warm water. Let it sit for 5-10 minutes until frothy.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together the flour and salt.
  3. Pour the yeast mixture and 1/4 cup olive oil into the flour mixture. Stir until a shaggy dough forms.
  4. Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead for 5-7 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  5. Lightly grease a clean bowl with olive oil. Place the dough in the bowl, turning to coat. Cover with plastic wrap and let rise in a warm place for 1-1.5 hours, or until doubled in size.
  6. While the dough is rising, prepare the cinnamon sugar topping by combining 1/4 cup granulated sugar and cinnamon in a small bowl.
  7. Once the dough has risen, gently punch it down. Grease a 9×13 inch baking pan with olive oil.
  8. Transfer the dough to the prepared pan and gently press it into an even layer, stretching it to fill the pan.
  9. Cover the pan and let the dough rest for another 30 minutes.
  10. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
  11. Drizzle the melted butter over the focaccia. Sprinkle the cinnamon sugar mixture evenly over the top.
  12. Using your fingertips, make dimples all over the surface of the focaccia.
  13. Bake for 20-25 minutes, or until golden brown and cooked through.
  14. Let cool slightly in the pan before transferring to a wire rack.

Notes

  • For an extra sweet treat, you can drizzle a simple glaze of powdered sugar and milk over the cooled focaccia.
  • Adjust the amount of cinnamon and sugar to your preference.
  • This focaccia is best enjoyed warm, perhaps with a cup of coffee or tea.
