Make simple, chewy cookie bars packed with M&Ms, perfect for holiday parties and cookie exchanges.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 cup packed light brown sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 1/2 cups M&Ms (holiday colors preferred)
  • 1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Line a 9×13 inch baking pan with parchment paper, leaving an overhang on the sides for easy removal.
  2. In a large bowl, cream together the softened butter, granulated sugar, and brown sugar until light and fluffy.
  3. Beat in the eggs one at a time, then mix in the vanilla extract.
  4. In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour, baking soda, and salt.
  5. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, mixing on low speed until just combined. Do not overmix.
  6. Fold in the M&Ms and chocolate chips by hand.
  7. Press the dough evenly into the prepared baking pan.
  8. Bake for 20 to 25 minutes, or until the edges are lightly golden and the center is set.
  9. Let the bars cool completely in the pan on a wire rack before lifting them out using the parchment paper overhang.
  10. Cut into squares.

Notes

  • For extra festive decoration, press a few extra M&Ms onto the top of the dough immediately after pressing it into the pan.
  • If you prefer a softer bar, slightly underbake them by 1-2 minutes.
  • Store cooled bars in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 4 days.
