Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 large egg, lightly beaten
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted, plus 2 tablespoons for browning
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 1/2 cups peeled, cored, and finely diced apples (about 2 medium apples)
  • 1/4 cup powdered sugar (for glaze)
  • 1 tablespoon milk or cream (for glaze)
  • 1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract (for glaze)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C). Lightly grease a large baking sheet or line it with parchment paper.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt, cinnamon, nutmeg, and granulated sugar.
  3. In a separate small bowl, whisk the egg, 1/2 cup milk, 1/4 cup melted butter, and 1 teaspoon vanilla extract until combined.
  4. Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients. Mix gently until just combined; do not overmix. Fold in the diced apples.
  5. Drop rounded tablespoons of batter onto the prepared baking sheet, spacing them about 2 inches apart. You should get about 12 to 14 fritters.
  6. Bake for 15 to 18 minutes, or until the edges are lightly golden brown and the centers are set.
  7. While the fritters bake, prepare the brown butter glaze. Melt the remaining 2 tablespoons of butter in a small saucepan over medium heat. Cook, swirling occasionally, until the butter foams and brown bits form at the bottom, giving off a nutty aroma. Remove from heat immediately.
  8. Whisk the powdered sugar, 1 tablespoon milk, and 1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract into the warm brown butter until smooth. If the glaze is too thick, add a few more drops of milk.
  9. Remove the warm apple fritters from the oven. Let them cool on the sheet for 5 minutes before transferring them to a wire rack.
  10. Drizzle the brown butter cinnamon glaze generously over the warm baked apple fritters. Serve immediately for the best warm apple fritters experience.

Notes

  • For crispier edges on your oven baked apple treats, you can lightly spray the tops of the batter mounds with cooking spray before baking.
  • Use tart apples like Granny Smith for the best texture and flavor contrast against the sweet glaze.
  • If you prefer a simpler topping, mix 1/2 cup powdered sugar with 1 teaspoon cinnamon and 2 tablespoons milk for a quick cinnamon glaze.
