Ingredients

Scale
  • 8 slices thick-cut bread, such as challah or brioche
  • 2 cups milk
  • 4 large eggs
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 2 tablespoons butter, melted
  • 1 large apple, peeled, cored, and thinly sliced
  • 1/4 cup chopped pecans (optional)
  • Maple syrup, for serving

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9×13 inch baking dish.
  2. Arrange the bread slices in a single layer in the prepared baking dish.
  3. In a large bowl, whisk together the milk, eggs, granulated sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt until well combined.
  4. Pour the egg mixture evenly over the bread, pressing down gently to ensure the bread absorbs the liquid.
  5. Scatter the sliced apples over the top of the bread mixture.
  6. Drizzle the melted butter over the apples and bread.
  7. Sprinkle with chopped pecans, if using.
  8. Cover the dish with foil and bake for 30 minutes.
  9. Remove the foil and bake for another 15-20 minutes, or until the French toast is golden brown and cooked through.
  10. Let it cool slightly before serving. Serve warm with maple syrup.

Notes

  • For an extra cozy touch, add a sprinkle of brown sugar on top before baking.
  • You can prepare this bake the night before and refrigerate it. Just add a few extra minutes to the baking time in the morning.
  • Feel free to use other fruits like pears or berries if apples aren’t your favorite.
